Wu Guanzhong, who died in 2010, was a contemporary painter, and was rewarded as a national treasure. His painters are used to be hot commodities in the auction. His small wood painting “Luxun’s Hometown”, with a specification of 44*61CM, was completed in 1977, and was auctioned with 5.15 million US Dollars (including commission) in Sotheby’s “Modern and Contemporary Asian Art Evening Auction” in 2nd,October, 2016.

Just like numerous contemporary traditional Chinese painters, Wu’s favorite theme of his landscapes is the scenery of the lower reaches of Yangtze River, which is a representation of the painter’s deep affection for the landscape, culture and history of his own country.
In his Homecoming, he wrote, “I have painted the scenery of Tibet Plateau, of Yulong Snow Mountain and of primeval forests, and also of surfy seas, of mountainous city, of the pine in Jinggangshan, and of the festival in Xishuangbanna…But I mostly prefer to draw my deep affection to my own hometown, which is linked with Luxun’s by flesh and blood ties.”

“In my creation of ‘Luxun’s Hometown’, I climbed up several hills of Shaoxin with my vision enlarged and momentum broadened. However, a composition of painting can never solely depend on a bird’s-eye view of the city. The reason is that the average state of plain division is bound to cause a loose picture, so I chose the concentrated dwellings as the main body of my composition. Then with the rivers flow around and across the dwellings, there come color blocks, strokes and the embryonic form of a painting. Overlooking Shaoxin from a hill top, appealing scenery is formed by the combination of black, white and grey color blocks.
