Chen Yifei Biography:
Chen Yifei (1946-2005; Chinese name 陈逸飞), a famous Chinese painter and visual artist, was a key figure in the history of the development of Chinese oil painting and also the most famous Chinese painter among the western world.
Taking Chinese elements as his subjects, Chen’s realistic works are filled with strong classical nostalgia and romantic feelings, especially those blue and lonely women who wear traditional clothes. By interpreting new conceptions about modernity and lifestyles, the painter became a forerunner in the new era of Chinese art. During his stay in New York in 1980, Chen held 6 solo exhibitions. His works were displayed at many key international art galleries, for example, New York International Gallery, Contemporary Art Center of New England, and Smith Art museum. When the present of Occidental Petroleum Dr. Hammer visited China in 1985, he gave Chen’s oil painting “Memory of Hometown—Twin Bridge” to Deng Xiaoping as a present.
His oil painting “Mountain Wind” was sold for 81.65 million RMB (or 13.5 millions USD) at the China Guardian Spring Auctions in 2011.
