Chu Teh-Chun Biography:

Chu Teh-Chun (1920.5.22-2014.3.26, Chinese name 朱德群) was a Chinese-French painter who was born in Xiao County, Anhui Province. He was the first academician of Chinese origin in the Académie des Beaux-Arts. The famous Chinese painter Wu Guanzhong claimed him to be “the one who has influenced my whole life”.

The artist held more than 50 exhibitions at home and abroad. His works are collected by Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Saint Louis University, Musée royal d'art moderne à Bruxelles and Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris, France. He was a famous contemporary overseas Chinese artist. Chu’s life experience was similar to that of Zhao Wuji (Zao Wou-Ki) and turned to abstract style of painting after he arrived in France. He often piled up rectangle color lump and created unique artistic conception by combining the euphemistic and exquisite nature of traditional Chinese painting and the techniques of Chinese ink painting with oil painting. The English and French version of Chu Teh-Chun, which was written by Pierre Cabanne, an art critic, was published in 1993.

In 2013, Chu Teh-Chun painting “Untitled” was sold at the Christie Auctions at the price of 70.68 million Hong Kong dollars, breaking the record of his works at auctions.
