Henri Matisse Biography:

Henri Matisse, 1869-1954, a French artist, was known for his brilliant use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship.

He was initially labeled a Fauvism (wild beast); by the 1920s he was hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French oil painting. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art. In 1952 the Matisse Museum in Le Cateau dedicated to Matisse paintings.

His work The Plum Blossoms was purchased in 2005 for the Museum of Modern Art, for US$25 million.
