Work Overview

Cliff at Etretat (La Porte d'Amont, Étretat)
Claude Monet
1868-1869
Oil on canvas
79.1 x 98.4 cm

Throughout his career, Monet painted specific sites repeatedly to explore how landscapes changed with the seasons and times of day. He loved the town of Étretat, in Normandy, a favored destination of painters and photographers as well as tourists. He wrote to his wife in 1883, “I can’t help myself from being seduced by these admirable cliffs.” The rocky coastline, which he painted more than sixty times, included natural limestone arches and the celebrated “needle,” seen through the archway of the Porte d’Amont in this early work. To capture this close-up view, Monet stood on a shoal exposed only at low tide. He conveys the texture of the rock’s striations, and their apparent proximity to the sky at dusk, by applying large, colorful bands of paint throughout the composition, a technique he would later abandon for short, comma-like brushstrokes.
