Work Overview

Jinsong, Wang  (Chinese name 王劲松) is known for his edgy oil paintings in a mode dubbed Cynical Realism, which acutely and wittily comment on the malaise of the times. He also examined the contemporary issues in Chinese society through a series of photographs that are juxtaposed repetitively.

Wang Jinsong was born in Heilongjiang Province, China. His work examines the implications of a range of government policies. After the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, Wang was among the first group of young artists to produce works critical of the political situation in China in a style that would later become known as Cynical Realism.

His works of conceptual photography are among the first to touch upon the issues facing modern China, such as large-scale urban development, the 'Westernization' of the Chinese people, and the policies affecting ordinary citizen, earning him a prominent position in the history of contemporary Chinese photography.
