Words from The Artist:
I am from the Dong ethnic group and grew up in an area where the Miao and Dong ethnic groups coexist. Creating artwork related to the villages of the Miao and Dong peoples is my expression of love for my hometown and understanding of Miao and Dong culture, as well as a way to remember my childhood. Even a banana leaf, a stack of straw, or a traditional house, or even a water buffalo or a chick from the village can inspire my creativity. It is these nostalgic feelings that motivate me to create, and it is a great pleasure for me to lose myself in the creative process. I always feel deeply moved when I complete a work.
Whenever I see pictures or videos of Miao and Dong villages on my phone or TV, I feel a deep sense of familiarity and excitement. When I see scenes of antiphonal singing or Lusheng dancing, I am even more excited. Therefore, I have been exploring ways to incorporate the disappearing culture of the Miao and Dong ethnic groups in the Qiandongnan area into my paintings, using the language of painting to record and reproduce the cultural and ethnic characteristics of these villages.
