Wu Guanzhong Biography:

Wu Guanzhong (1919.8.29-2010.6.25, Chinese name 吴冠中), born in the city of Yixing, Jiangsu Province, China, was a contemporary Chinese painter, and an educator of modern painting. He taught at China Central Academy of Fine Arts, and won many honors at home and abroad, for example, Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, corresponding academician of Académie des Beaux-Arts.

The artist was famous for both his artistic achievements and his moral character. He had published more than 40 albums of paintings and dozens of literature anthologies. He held many exhibitions at home and abroad and his works are collected by museums in many countries. The British Museum held an exhibition for him, breaking their own unwritten convention of exhibiting merely ancient cultural relics. The painter held the idea of “Sinicizing oil painting” and “modernizing Chinese painting” in art creation, which made the distinct characteristic of his artworks.

At the Poly Spring Auctions in Hong Kong, his 1997 oil painting “The Zhou Village” made a new record in the auctions of Chinese oil painting with 236 million Hong Kong dollars (about 30 million US dollars).
