Yue Minjun Biography:

Yue Minjun (1962- ; Chinese name 岳敏君), a famous contemporary Chinese painter who was born in the city of Daqing, has held many solo exhibitions at home and abroad.

His works are collected by many museums at home and abroad, for example, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Francois Mitterrand Cultural Center. His typical male images that close their eyes and smile exaggeratively with their mouth wide open are regarded as a kind of nationalization and marketization. They are often connected with the political amplification of “Self Image” that causes the reflection of the audiences.

In 2007, Yue Minjun’s oil painting “Execution” was sold for 2.93 million Euro (44 million RMB) at the Sotheby’s Auction in London, which created the highest record of the contemporary Chinese artworks at auctions at that time. This piece was regarded as something connecting to the “Tiananmen Square protests” in June 4th, 1989. After finishing the work in 1995, the artist sold it to a Hong Kong painting-seller for only about 5000 RMB.
