In a letter from Klimt to his friend Marie Zimmermann, Klimt mentions the painting Farmhouse with birch. Young birches were a popular motive for painters as it symbolized the season of spring and the rapid growth of young people.
Klimt was a very attentive observer of nature and here shows the meadows in three different stages. The meadow in front with daisies, the narrow reed stripe on the left and the mown meadow with, for the Salzkammergut so typical fruit trees, in the back.
