“Riding Couple”, painted in 1906, is an early work of the man that started the expressionism movement in abstract art—Wassily Kandinsky.

The painting depicts a beautiful city on the river, filled with churches whose golden domes remind ones of Moscow and a couple in traditional Russian costumes embracing on horseback. The painting is highly romantic and is reminiscent of a mosaic on a dark background.

It is because of this mosaic-like technique that the heroes’ clothes and horse’s saddle blanket seem so luxurious, so richly decorated with embroidery or gems they appear to shine.

A peculiar light saturates the scene, recreating the tumult of autumn. Brilliant red and brown leaves lushly carpet the earth while their tiny golden brothers still cling to the birches. The water ripples. A chilly autumn breeze is almost palpable. Everything feels mystical, fantastical and a little haunted.

The artist’s choice of colour was heavily influenced by childhood experiences.

“Colour is the tool with which the soul can be directly influenced.” In this Kandinsky saw the main qualities of an artist.

The painting is in the Lehnbachhaus, Munchen.
