The premise for being a master is courage (or integrity).
Courage means to go against the trend in techniques or thoughts.
Renaissance, impressionism, abstractionism, fauvism, surrealism, postmodernism and others, they all go against the trend no matter in techniques or thoughts when they first came into being.
Even though the work of a master does not go against the trend, his moral character does so.
Nowadays, if an artist wants to be a master, he/she must have the courage to reform the technique and refine his thought other than going to vulgar, making up to the need of the market and singing the praises in order to be pleased with himself/herself as somebody.
