Natural and Simple, Warm and Touching: Li Jiahui’s Art Creations
Li Jiahui (1940-2010) was a member of Fujian Artists Association, and a dean and associate professor of the Art Department in Jimei University. He devoted all his life to the creation of art and incorporated what he had learned from art creation over the years into his art teaching. As a result, his lectures were easy to understand and were popular among students. In addition, he accomplished a lot in drawing and gained many honors and praises. His works are on display in many art exhibitions at home and abroad and many of his works are now collected by museums at provincial and municipal levels. His oil painting Huan Guang Qu (Song of Fisherman) gained the bronze medal at the 10th international art contest in 1998 and Hui’an Women also won bronze medal the next year at the 11th international art contest. When Singing Palette was arranging his works in 2007, we visited him twice and he was as homely as his works and was very kind. Unfortunately that was the last time we met him.

Li Jiahui was famous for his oil paintings. His style was simple, close to natural and based on the real life itself. Painting what he had seen in daily life with his simple, earnest, and warming brushwork and restoring the original appearance of natural scenery, his oil paintings contain the simpleness and naturalness of “Green covers the mountains while the river is running white. In the singing of cuckoo, misty rain falls.” He pursued all his life the truth, the good and the beautiful in life and described natural sceneries and daily scenes with warm tone, which is like an old man looking at the ground tenderly. This is perhaps what “to paint as one wishes and the spirit is gained; lively spirit and charm creates the novel artistic conception” means.

Generally speaking, Li Jiahui often took daily life scenes and natural sceneries as the objects of his art creation. He treated life with a simple and pure heart and held the attitude of “integrating my affections into my art creation”. Thus his works restored the original appearance of life and added the element of art inspiration, which is simply, earnest, warming and touching. This warming and touching element is more obviously demonstrated in his work Coming Back from the Sea. In this work, the color is dim at the far distance and fog sticks around, which is the truly reappearance of the setting sun over the sea. The sun set over two fishing-boats, which are drawing near the shore from the sea. At the near part, the color was vivid while the lines are gentle. Fishing-boats, fishermen and the fishing games are clearly to the sight. Li Jiahui was compositing the picture from an aerial perspective, which made the nearer scene become real while the distant scene become virtual. In the whole picture, the nearer and distant sights are clearly distinguished, bringing the artistic conception to the audiences as if they are in the picture.
Li Jiahui oil painting

Li Jiahui’s style was warm and sweet. Far and near sights interweave in his composition while the light and shade are clearly distinguished. Based on the warm tone and through the comparison of the changing tone from far to near, his works express common people’s love for life and their homely wishes for self-pursuit. He also used gentle and clear lines to display people’s courage to face life’s challenges and their strong vitality. All these reflect the painter’s simple and natural artistic feelings as well as his concern for ordinary people’s common life, containing the deep implication of a harmonious nature.

Li Keran, a master of landscape painting, once said that “the artistic conception is the soul of art, which is the concentration of the quintessence of objective things moulded by the thoughts and feeling of the painter. It integrates the scenery and the feelings through highly art processing and expresses the feelings through the scenery. In this way, the artistic state and poetic quality is gained.” The real scenes bring out the true feelings. Li Jiahui kept a pure and simple heart of a child in his art creation from the beginning to the end, offering his true heart and tender feelings. For example, in The Young Lady beside the River, there are thick green trees in the far distance with a river running through it. The carefree and sheltered green arouses our imagination and gives us a sense of space. In the near part, he applied warm tone to display vividly the gentle and elegant image of a young lady combing her long hair beside the river. There is motion in the quiescence: while the young lady’s comb was right in the middle of her hair, the action of combing her hair seems to last forever. The whole picture is fresh and simple, the style is natural. By using the paraperspective of composition, he divided the picture into different layers, bringing the image of the young lady and the scene to life. The scene of a young lady sitting on the stone beside the river was emphasized. The painting style is gentle, sweet and vivid, making the audiences enjoy themselves so much as to forget to leave. Li Jiahui endowed the fresh artistic conception and earnest connotation to ordinary things through his paintbrush.

Li Jiahui works

In general, Mr. Li Jiahui’s art creation is close to daily life. His style seems simply, but full of the artistic connotation of warming, purity and fineness, which brings the esthetical enjoyment for the audiences. In the market-oriented art trend, he still kept his own unique style. It is like a big plain tree which put its root deep under the ground, simple but earnest.
