Flowerpot with Chives Vincent van Gogh Date: 1887; Paris, France * Style: Post-Impressionism Genre: flower painting Media: oil, canvas Location: Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Van Gogh preferred to select items from daily life to portray in his still life paintings. With Flowerpot with Chives (F337) Van Gogh used a thin brush to carefully create this painting of a pot of chives. Contrasting colors of red and orange against green are used in this work. The background is a pattern that Van Gogh used in other works,[49] such as Still life with Carafe and Lemons (F340).[50] From the time this painting was made in 1887 and forward, Van Gogh used colorful backgrounds for his still lifes and portraits.
