Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is considered one of the most significant painters in art history. Though he was only active as a painter for about a decade, he produced over 2100 artworks featuring portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Van Gogh was plagued in life by mental illness and poverty, and interest in his work only came about after his suicide at 37 years old. He was part of the Post-Impressionist art movement which followed the Impressionist focus on real life subject matter using vivid colors and thick application of paint, but emphasized geometric forms, distorting forms and using counterintuitive color combinations for expressive effect.
